India VS West Indies 1st ODI Match Prediction 8th August 2019

Match Preview

For all the noise that the West Indies made at the start of the ICC World Cup 2019, it could only win two matches in the entire campaign. A brutal mauling of Pakistan and scraping through against Afghanistan would not have been the goals that West Indies would have set.

It must also be remembered that the West Indies had to play a tough qualifying tournament because of its low ICC ODI ranking and it must start winning to avoid that same fate again.

Chris Gayle is going to come back into the side after scoring some runs in the Global T20 Canada. As we saw in the World Cup, though, getting runs in T20 leagues is no guarantee for success at the international level.

We think John Campbell may get a chance to open the batting with Chris Gayle, followed by Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Carlos Brathwaite, Fabien Allen, Sheldon Cottrell, and Oshane Thomas.

Kemar Roach is a genuine wicket-taker and he could play ahead of Fabien Allen or Oshane Thomas but think he is going to miss out.

The West Indies has plenty of batting talent, on paper at least, but the trick is going to be to find consistency. Too often their batsmen don’t show enough patience and lose wickets in a hurry eventually having to struggle to play out the fifty overs.

The bowling is not too good, especially without Andre Russell to provide the X-factor and they are going to struggle to take 10 Indian wickets. We just hope the West Indies takes ODI cricket seriously and with a long-term view otherwise this is going to be a very one-sided series.

Does losing a semi-final make India a bad side? We think it is a testament to how good the side is that anything less than a World Cup victory was regarded as a failure. The Indian team has been consistently among the best ODI sides in the world and enters this series ranked number 2.

The Indian strengths are easy to identify. They have a superb top-order and plenty of variety in their bowling attack. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli are going to be the top-3 for the side and they are going to be enough to win most matches.

The problem comes from number 4 onward. Lokesh Rahul should get a chance to cement that position especially after his decent performances at that number in the World Cup. We think Manish Pandey will play at number 5, Rishab Pant at 6, followed by Ravindra Jadeja at 7. India can then choose to play both three fast bowlers and one spinner or two of each depending on the conditions.

Mohammad Shami is back in the team and will lead the bowling attack next to Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. Khaleel Ahmed and Navdeep Saini will be hoping for some chances in this series to showcase their skills further.

There are not too many weaknesses in the Indian team. We have seen over the last few years that they only struggle when they lose early wickets or when they are set targets of above 330. Neither of these things is going to be easy for the West Indies to do.
