Match Preview

The stakes are high as the two sides meet to seal their spot in the Super 10 stage of the World T20 2016. Both Afghanistan and Zimbabwe have won their respective games prior to this and are yet to be beaten. So, it will be one of them who will lose its only game in the tournament so far and will be knocked out of the tournament right away. Let’s take a look at the two sides and assess their strengths and weaknesses.

Afghanistan have played some really good cricket so far in the tournament and they have thrashed their opponents with their batting in both the games that they have played so far in the tournament. It is their openers Mohammad Shehzad and Noor Ali Zadran who looked in good knick in both the matches and gave them top starts with the bat. In fact, Shehzad humiliated the bowlers giving them no respect whatsoever.

He scored 61 in the first match and 41 in the second match which simply set up the victories for the Afghans. The captain Stanikzai scored 55 in his first outing in the tournament while Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran looked impressive with the bat as well.

Their bowlers restricted Hong Kong to just 116 in the last match and just held their nerves to seal a win against Scotland in the first match. So, overall it’s been great going for them in the bowling department as well. In this most important fixture, they will be relying on the spinners majorly. However, the pacers need to chip in with wickets if they really have to challenge the Zimbabweans.

Zimbabwe won two close games in the tournament and will have a good chance to outsmart thriving Afghanistan today as well. Someone from the lot has stepped up to perform and win them the match in their last two outings but this time they will be eyeing a team performance in order to outsmart the most prolific side in their group. They have managed 147 and 158 with the bat in their two matches that have been played so far.

So, it looks fine with the bat for them so far. They will be expecting good scores from their top 4 this time around with the likes of Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda, Richmond Mutumbami and Sean Williams to put a fighting total on the board. Sibanda and Williams have been the only fifty getters for Zimbabwe in the tournament so far, therefore, they’ll be expected to put up a good show today as well.

Wellington Masakadza earned them the victory against Scotland single-handedly as he picked up 4 for 28 in his 4 overs. Chatara and Tiripano are amongst wickets as well so they’re expected to halt the flow of runs for Afghanistan.

Captain’s Trivia

Asghar Stanikzai

With a 50 under his belt, the Afghan captain has lead his side wonderfully in the World T20 so far. He’ll be looking forward to yet another victory to take his side to the Super 10.

Hamilton Masakadza

Even though Masakadza hasn’t really impressed with the bat so far in World T20 but he has lead his side exceptionally well, securing consecutive victories. Another one is certainly on the cards.

Match Predictions

Afghanistan will be the favorites considering the way they have smashed their opponents in first couple of matches.

Pitch/Weather Updates

Slow wicket at Nagpur will make it hard for the batsmen to score runs on a warm day with 40° C maximum temperature. However, if the batsmen adjust to the pace of the wicket then good scores can be expected from both sides.
